America’s ‘Current’ View on Abortion

We hear the ‘A’ word used a lot in this country and the media leads us to believe that only a few religious crazies want to stop/reduce abortions.  Apparently that isn’t true.

The following commentary was written by a friend for the local paper and his source was the Knights of Columbus.  That source information is available here.  (The charts make for greater visible understanding.)

There IS a Consensus on Abortion

By Don Volz. — Guest Column published in the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung, Saturday, January 30, 2016

Believe it or not, there’s a lot of consensus about abortion in America these days. That consensus is growing every year, notwithstanding a media blackout that tries to hide it from the American people.

A new Marist Poll was released Tuesday, January 19, with findings that may surprise you. However, it’s not surprising that you may not have heard about it. The Main Stream Media (MSM) does its best to ignore, play down, and outright distort how the majority of Americans feel about abortion. The Associated Press, Reuters, the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, ABC, BBC, CBS, NBC, and yes, even the Fox News Channel on occasion, are the leading MSM offenders. Most large metropolitan daily newspapers and TV network affiliates are guilty by association.

The MSM persistently peddles the myth that America will be forever split on the abortion issue by focusing on the fact that Americans self-identify as either pro-life or pro-choice in roughly equal numbers. That perpetual focus on pro-life and pro-choice labels is a smokescreen designed to conceal Americans’ widespread support for reasonable abortion restrictions. It illustrates yet again why the MSM has lost its credibility with the American people.

The Marist survey cleared away the smoke, revealing that the great majority of Americans support tougher restrictions on abortion, including this bombshell: more than 6 out of 10 pro-choice individuals favor banning abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, except to save the life of the mother. No wonder the MSM ignored the survey.

Overall, the survey found that an astounding 81 percent of Americans favor significant restrictions on access to abortion, including limiting abortion to the first trimester of pregnancy, cases of incest or rape, or cases where the mother’s life is seriously at risk. That group includes 66 percent of the respondents who self-identified as pro-choice. That last statistic bears repeating – two thirds of pro-choice Americans oppose unrestricted access to abortion.

Opponents of abortion restrictions like to portray tougher abortion laws as evidence of the mythical “war on women.” How can that be true when 82 percent of the women surveyed in the poll say they favor restricting abortion to the first three months of pregnancy? The survey also found that 69 percent of women oppose taxpayer funding for abortion services. These findings suggest that unregulated and tax-subsidized abortion is the real war on women.

The survey showed that 68 percent of Americans oppose the use of public funds for abortion services. Even more telling, 51 percent of those who identify as pro-choice also oppose public funding for abortion. Yet, Planned Parenthood (PP) and other abortion providers continue to receive over $500 million in federal tax dollars every year. It’s little wonder that the MSM tries so hard to ignore, dismiss, and discredit the covert videos produced by the Center for Medical Progress – the often stomach-turning interviews with PP employees that exposed PP’s sordid ”unborn baby parts for sale” line of business.

Finally, there’s the MSM’s “coverage” of the January marches for life in Washington, D.C. and other North American cities every year. Historically, there has been little or no MSM coverage of these events, even though they consistently involve hundreds of thousands of people marching to renew a Culture of Life, often in the teeth of frigid, inhospitable weather. That coverage, when found, consists of deceptive headlines, misleading photos, and vastly understated participant counts, all intended to conceal abortion perspectives like those revealed in the Marist Poll.

MSM coverage of the January 22, 2016, Washington March for Life is a prime example. On the cusp of a historic blizzard, forty thousand or more committed souls of all ages, ethnicities, and genders braved the storm to participate. Yet the New York Times said the march attracted “hundreds” of participants and the Washington Post described the marchers as a “small, faithful crowd.”

The truth is that a large majority of Americans want abortion to be, at the very least, more restricted, more regulated, and far less commonplace than it is today. Planned Parenthood, NARAL, NOW, President Obama, and the Democrat party find that truth unacceptable. And that is why their MSM propagandists work so diligently to hide it.

It’s time to change the dialogue about abortion in America. It’s time we look beyond the deceptions and distortions promulgated by the MSM. It’s time to end the focus on pro-choice and pro-life labels that only serve to divide us. It’s time to concentrate on the abortion views we share, to seize the common ground. It’s time to change an abortion status quo that ‘We the People’ never asked for and never really supported. It’s time to enact the abortion restrictions that the vast majority of Americans support.

The referenced Marist Poll interviewed 1,686 adults across America and has a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percent.

You won’t hear about any of it from the MSM.
